the night before
i cherished it and then it was gone. the night followed. incomplete darkness and incomplete silence. this is Vegas after all. a jagged line of colorful sunrise follows the distant mountain peaks. the changes in the quality of light draws me in. up on the 23rd floor looking down. i have hope edged with anxious thoughts which cannot be controlled. the man who loves me sleeps into daylight. i walk the hotel casino lobby with coffee to swallow medication. song fragments enter my head and exit my lips. working against the grain of the stabbing pain of a hateful mother who told my brother i have gone to the devil. i am not even religious and it’s not even true. it’s a sad way life went with us. we were once so close. i am trying to get by without being upset with her. we went to a comedy show last night and laughed and laughed and laughed. seeing you happy is a thrill. we lost one another on the strip for a couple of hours and it almost broke my heart. we made love after a ten hour drive into the desert. the fountains do a synchronized dance before blasting thirty feet into the air. she is characterologically incapable of being kind once she has made up her mind on someone. my brother is getting it now. i want to help him because i know how it feels to be discarded. we are going to walk to what used to be the International Hotel. this city swallowed Elvis up. i suppose he could be accused of going to the devil, too. but he brought joy into so many people’s hearts. there is no single narrative that defines you. the lines are always jagged. backlit by fresh sunsets and rises. the life can be really good if you let it!

holy day
there was no newspaper on the holy day. plenty of fellowship and coffee at the church of aa. there were not any usual stores open but seven eleven. a woman stood barefoot in the cold in front of the store as people came and went. she appeared dissociated and did not respond to any caring voices. what can be done? in a couple of months the sacramento bee will be phasing out newsprint on saturdays. times change and yet i hope for things worthwhile, that they not fall off the margins.

letter home
I wish I could call you and thank you for the yummy turkey and green bean casserole. I caught a bad cold so my voice is compromised. Hope you had a safe trip home and I miss you. If I'm well enough I plan to go see the family in Tahoe this weekend as Xmas falls on my day off. The last 3 months have been the hardest yet most exciting time in the past 5 years what with interviews and licensing demands and writing my book and training for my ultrarun in March. I'm taking this moment of rest to breathe (with inhalers 2 help!) and appreciate all that I'm trying to accomplish. None of it would have been possible without your help so I thank you. Love. K

Journal # 12.25.16
Into the snow and nowhere to go, good times with the family. Cell phone short circuits in the frosty air, Santa Claus is up there, keep the dog close so coyotes don't get him. I have no idea how the day will play out, just gonna go with it. This is not my territory, exactly, but I feel loved. Live life without limits. You can do anything -- so dream big!

lady of the table grapes
You were an endangered species, out of it, staring into your bowl of green seedless table grapes. And the weather outside was frightful. I asked you again about the backyard, and you said that you didn't grow up there, your eyelashes were too long. Nat King Cole came on the radio and I suddenly felt safer than I really was. You took out your personal fork and stabbed a grape dead. I could not make sense of you, all I knew was you had no manners and a predilection for round juicy fruits. I picked up my pen and wrote a letter to the devil, carefully, on a soft cotton sheet of medicated Kleenex... dear Satan, could you please make a home for our homicidal lady of the table grapes?

force me through the holidays
I could take my happy freshly home-highlighted head on a smiling walk down the road, the street flanked by sycamore trees and not so many post office boxes anymore, throwing all their skinny winter arms into the empty sky asking for what? Ya I could on a head full of Peruvian Oro Verde.
I am makin' room for us so small in my head, I only have a cupboard left to rent it's like New York City in there. Ya but I'll do it just to keep you. I could freeze and throw my arms up, too, and stand there until it's dark and a Ford Explorer with one headlight takes me out -- so how I feel is real -- I hurt the way you hate me, passively, denyin it all along like your some kinda saint cannot hate.
I love the way I remember us. I could continue, long past the ancient era of news and music and video on paper and tapes. Or I could shut the cupboard up and paint it, put the painting over it my friend just gave me. Something new, you know. Where love goes after a dead end. Left me stupid, left me dumb, left me empty at the end of a road, thanks a lot. Then told me keep going, right off the road. If I still loved you I could and you know I would.
How much silence is left to dilute the poison in a media concentrated mind. Give me an ugly sweater, some pumpkin pie and a league of national football and force me through the holidays. Honey, I'm sorry, I don't mean to wake you...but... how much poison is left, is there enough to kill the silence?
No, no, fuck all that!
Gimme a broken home to fix. I'll take my memories on multigrain, multiplatinum, put it on a wall, behind glass. Then one night in creative impulse, after he chases up my skirt and back down into a dream, I'll break the glass and pull the alarm, hover out on a hard drive's shiny disc, slicing through an mp3 made by you and me. I'll run away and then walk back. I'll love you in secret. I'll make love with a memory pulled out of a locket. I'll stab the knife into the socket. I'll pray for us in public. I'll stare into the eyes of the baby tigers.

Journal # 12.16.15
I still wished the clock would stop and give us a chance to breathe but time preferred to kick ass, drag our hearts around, and mine kept getting snagged in the pricklies or thumped down some steps or stepped on by a bunch of children runnin' blind for milk and cookies, kick the can around the parking lot for fun, ran up some stairs and dropped from heights to see if it would bounce or explode, or what, and either way sure was hell of a good time, I swear, when you have my undivided attention, guys just stand there and step on it, suddenly great theatrics, entertainment, and maybe even a bloody mess.
When you care the most, when they have you, you can get heartless. Winter never wanted to be so icy cold. It just had to. Yes I will warm it up with some Charlie Brown Xmas cards and long live snail mail. The post office is my second favorite living museum behind the bookstore. Some millenial stopped me yesterday sayin' wait, you mean people still do that? I was thinking, wait, did you just say that? Never liked sending cards when it was the thing to do, and now when it's going out of style I'm intent upon it.
These songs, without words, arise in my head. I gotta put words to them. I was chosen. I was chosen for the in-law unit out back. Where is she? She's in the shadows, we don't see her much. She's in the periphery. She's part of the goddam scenery, dontcha know? She produces something fierce! You shouldn't bother her, really, she likes to be left alone and do what she does. It's something magical, I suppose. But you won't make much sense of her, she's not exactly on the planet anymore, everything is dissociated, tangential at best. Maybe her heart got caught in the blender one too many times, ya, it's a bit of a tragedy. They told her but you have so much to offer just one too many times. Her potential rose up and bricked her in the head. She's not quite there, but we love her just the same. If she would only let us.

DECEMBER 25
Wax pools
on windowsills
roasted chestnut
pine burning
turkey roasting
and dripping
away
coffee and cream
awoken from dream
to dream
sight of snow
or wreath and
bow. and lights
like stars
sound of bells
ringing. nat king cole
singing through the point
of a needle on vinyl
to you
children
laughing and jumping
for joy
smiling christians
at the dawn
of day
the kids take the stairs
three or four at a time
to the tree
and gifts
below
grandparents moved
and moving real
slow
may saint nick
ride his sleigh on
eight or more
magical flying reindeer
deep
to all the homes of all
the bad children
too
to see the no good ones
to forgive them
may saint nick
ride the magic on
to the east
to the islamic children
the buddhist children
the hindu children
the hebrew children
so all
of all faiths
feel loved
big and little children alike
on christmas day
good and the bad
naughty and nice
ones who eat meat
ones who eat rice
ones who never seen
the sparkle of ice
and may we learn a thing
from our imagination
this Xmas
and learn to love
more easily
now

forecast. partly sunny to breakthrough of light
Listen my friend, you will do well today to simply approach your interests, wherever you may find yourself. Your environment need not stop you today, from following your attention where it leads you. All you gotta do, my friend, is breathe in and out, carry yourself as best you know how, love yourself a little or alot, be courageous and immerse yourself in the moment. Allow for silences to fill up the room. Look anyone you want in the eye. If difficulty arises, have confidence you can bring your light into the dark places where others may very well reside, this holiday season. Immerse yourself in your felt senses, and let your intuition be your guide today. Follow your heart towards its passion, even if it is unfamiliar exploration of any given situation. Have gratitude. You are right where you oughta be, okay? Loving you today, if you cannot love yourself. You will find a way. xo - K.
